2006 sees the 20 th Anniversary of Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, one of the longest running and most successful of the UK based jazz groups.

Having already spent twenty years on the cutting edge of modern rock percussion with Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and UK, Bill Bruford formed Earthworks in 1986, as a deliberate return to his roots in jazz. Bruford encourages the use of rock technology with jazz sensibility – the hall mark of Earthwork’s stylish approach. By letting in air and light, and adding a little wit and wisdom, they brought a particularly British antidote to the increasingly grotesque jazz fusion scene. The first LP for Editions EG, Earthworks, was a testament to their achievement.

The band quickly found its direction through serious live playing. Japan , Europe , and the UK were all visited before the release of the first album. A second edition of the band reconvened in 1997, and, continued to use the best British talent available. Around that time, Bill effectively jettisoned electronic percussion to revisit a fresh acoustic sax-piano-bass-drums line up. Ten years, and six CD releases later, Earthworks remains an inventive and exciting band, a balance between acoustic chamber jazz and fresh, contemporary jazz fusion.
