It's 1996. The Stone Roses - arguably one of the most important bands of this generation - have split. But Ian Brown feels he still has some music in him. The gardening takes a side step - for now, and 12 months later, after locking himself away learning various musical instruments, Ian returns with his first solo album, Unfinished Monkey Business. An album of 12 tracks produced and mixed by Ian himself, UMB is a 'lo-fi' bunch of tunes which show the size of the man's determination, from Roses drummer Reni giving him a guitar, to the final eclectic finished product - bringing in a host of old friends to help him along the way.

++ FRANZ FERDINAND ++

The Glasgow four-piece formed in 2001 and being stylish art-school types, they quickly adopted a memorable moniker – choosing that of an Austro-Hungarian Archduke (as you do). While the original Archduke's story was short (his death sparked the outbreak of WW 1) , Scotland native's Franz Ferdinand's future looks bright. The band released their debut EP Darts Of Pleasure on Domino Records in September 2003 to great critical acclaim. This was followed by the singles Take Me Out (February 2004) , Matinee (April 2004) and This Fire (November 2004). The album Franz Ferdinand was released in February 2004 and a much-anticipated follow-up is currently in production.

Placebo was founded when former Luxembourg schoolmates Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal met by accident at South Kensington tube station in 1994 and decided to form a band. While briefly known as Ashtray Heart, the band quickly settled on the name Placebo. The band could not decide on a drummer at first with Steve Hewitt and Robert Schultzberg alternating on the spot. While Hewitt was the preferred choice, he also had other
commitments as drummer for London band Breed, leading to Schultzberg being the drummer when the band signed its contract with Caroline Records. This said, the band offically say that "family commitments" was the reason for his absence. As the other band members were having difficulty getting on with Robert Schultzberg, they persuaded Hewitt to rejoin the band in 1997.

The singles "Nancy Boy", from Placebo (1995), and "Pure Morning", from Without You I'm Nothing (1998), were the peak of their British success, both charting in the top ten. Since Without You I'm Nothing the band have fallen out of fashion particularly with the British music press, who regularly mock the personality and pretensions of its lead member, Brian Molko. However, the band retained a huge popular and critical following in continental Europe . Their style altered little from Placebo through Black Market Music (2000), based around fairly straightforward guitar playing, often influenced by the style of 1970s British and American rock, and Molko's high-pitched, nasal vocals.

The band was asked to play at David Bowie's fiftieth birthday party at Madison Square Garden . The band's glam connections continued in 1998 when it recorded a version of "20th Century Boy" by T. Rex for the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack. Members of the band also appear in the movie.

As the last millennium flickered to a close and fresh from releasing the sublime third album Ideal Crash and the Europe-wide sell out extravaganza of the accompanying tour, new vistas began to beckon and a trail of personal solo musical projects and, in lead singer Tom Barman's case, the small matter of writing and directing his debut movie, 'Any Way The Wind Blows', led the band in a myriad of different directions. So diversely busy has the band been that it is a wonder that they actually made it back so quickly. It all began in 1994. A small but vibrant Antwerp music scene meant that most alternative bands were incestuous, liquid beings; with each musician being as likely to be in five bands as one, but a mutual love of all things alternative and underground, melded five talented musicians and performers into dEUS. A band that spent the next six years producing a body of work that, chameleon-like, was able to array it's colour shifts of musical style and tone in dazzling kaleidoscope but, in shape, was eternally, indisputably and unmistakably dEUS.

Maximo Park are an indie rock band, signed to Warp Records, who formed in Newcastle , North East England in April 2003. They consist of Paul 'Scooby' Smith (vocals), Duncan Lloyd (guitar), Archis Tiku (bass guitar), Lukas Wooller (keyboards) and Tom English (drums). Drawing comparisons to Pulp and Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park were, along with cohorts The Futureheads, North-East England 's response to the post-punk revival of the 2000 s. Drummer Tom English is also in the band Field Music,

but his contributions are becoming scarce as Maximo Park continue their expansion. In July 2005 their debut album, A Certain Trigger, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. They also contributed a song to the War Child compilation Help: A Day in the Life. In 2005 they have swiftly risen to indie fame and their debut album, A Certain Trigger, hailed by some critics as one of the best releases of the year, has led to a increasing devoted fanbase in the United Kingdom, re-enforced by a series of increasingly large tours and a support slot to the Kaiser Chiefs on the NME Rock & Roll Riot Tour. The band are soon to play Brixton Academy as part of [Xfm's[ 1] Winter Wonderland] show, which sold out in ten minutes, and have been confirmed as headliners for NME Awards Tour early next year.

The same no frills sense of adventure informs Final Straw, Snow Patrol's third album. Already established as a heart-crushing mix of distorted British pedal rock and US alternative guitar pop on home soil, the album sees the band grow up, fill out and with some aplomb, make one of the best British records you'll hear this year. But success hasn't come easily and the Snow Patrol back-story began way back at Dundee University in 1994 when Lightbody bumped into guitarist, Mark McClelland. “Our eyes met across the crowded dance floor,” says Lightbody. “I knew he was the one for me. We clicked musically and we liked the same bands, so we thought ‘Why not start one of our own?' That was the beginning of Snow Patrol.” Well, not quite. The first band name picked out by the duo was Polar Bear, a title also being used by ex-Jane's Addiction bassist, Eric Avery. When the threat of a lawsuit loomed, Lightbody and McClelland had a rethink and went for the equally wintry Snow Patrol. Still they had the last laugh and after signing to Scotland 's Jeepster records (home to Belle and Sebastian, among others), the three piece, now with drummer Jonny Quinn in place, released their cheekily-titled debut, Songs For Polar Bears in 1998.
