It is impossible to not come across this group at least once when exploring Korean music. Formed in 1998, boy band Shinhwa has reigned on top of mainstream Kpop for over seven years.
The group was originally founded by SM Entertainment along with 3 others groups (SES, H.O.T, and Fly to the Sky), they were the 'frontline' of SM's new wave of young talents to take over the Kpop industry.
Lead Vocal Shin Hyesung (Jung PilGyo), who was studying English in the US , was first to be recruited by SM. Then Eric Mun, raised in Los Angeles , was added. Next came Andy (Lee SunHo), who was originally supposed to be in the group H.O.T, joined as the third member. While Lee Minwoo was found by SM scouts at a dance competition. And Jun Jin (Park ChongJae) was introduced to the group by high school friend Kangta. The last one to join the 6 member group was Kim Dongwan, who had seen a video of the group practicing and decided to join.
The group's first album Eusha Eusha, released in 1998, didnt actually receive a big response from the general public. The image of 'cuteness' was just too boyish for the teenage group that most boy bands aim for. It was their second album T.O.P (Twinkling of Paradise), released in the spring of 1999 that truly placed group Shinhwa on the map permanently. With energetic beats and power dancing Shinhwa's 2nd jib (album) was a huge success.
Almost a year later following in the wake of their success, Shinhwa's third album, Only One was released. Though it was T.O.P that marked Shinhwa's success, it was their 3rd album that had the highest record sales.
Finally pleased with the growing Shinhwa fan base (named Shinhwa Changjo), SM launched the First Mythology Concert Tour in early 2001. And shortly after returning from a successful first concert, Shinhwa released their 4th album (Hey Come On) with confidence. It was also during this year that the "Korean Wave" began to spread into Japan , Taiwan , and China , making them official an international band.
Shinhwa went on to release 2 more albums under SM Entertainment.
But in 2003 when Shinhwa's contract with SM was over, there was much worry from Shinhwa fans that the group would be breaking up. However after deciding not to renew their contract with SM, Shinhwa signed a new contract with new company Good Entertainment.
Since the new contract didn't begin until January 2004, each member decided to take the six months in-between contracts to do individual activities outside of group Shinhwa. Eric, And, Junjin and Dongwan took the time practicing their acting skills; Eric in the well known Bulsae (Firebird) drama, Andy and Jun Jin both jumped aboard the comedy show Nonstop 4., and Dongwan stared in his first big screen movie: Spin Kick. Hyesung and Minwoo on the other hand decided to further pursue their singing careers; Minwoo (M) with his first solo album Un-touch-able, and Hyesung forming a project group called S with best friends Lee Jihoon and Kangta.
These six perfect men under the name Shinhwa will come here to meet you and their Thai fans in the concert I-Mobile presents SHINHWA 2006 Tour "State of the Art" Live in Bangkok
