Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat
| Music by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics by Tim Rice
In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul's Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a 'pop cantata' for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007's and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph. The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream coat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
The first project under their new contract was a second piece for schools, entitled Come Back Richard, Your Country Needs You, based on the story of Richard I and his minstrel, Blondel. It was performed with Alan Doggett once again as musical director at the City of London School in November 1969, but Andrew and Tim did not take the project further as they had already discussed another idea, the story of Jesus Christ. Tim Rice remained convinced of his second idea for schools and subsequently developed it into the musical Blondel. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice then went on to write Jesus Christ Superstar. It was the success of Jesus Christ Superstar that enabled Joseph to continue to grow.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is the composer of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and Tell Me On A Sunday later combined as Song & Dance, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game and The Woman in White. He composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The Odessa File, and a setting of the Latin Requiem Mass Requiem for which he won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition.
He has also produced in the West End and on Broadway not only his own work but the Olivier award-winning plays La Bete and Daisy Pulls It Off. In summer 2002 in London he presented the groundbreaking A R Rahman musical Bombay Dreams.

Tim Rice

November 2005 Tim Rice (full name Timothy Miles Bindon Rice)
was born on 10 November 1944 in Buckinghamshire.
Tim Rice abandoned his law studies to join EMI, which led to his
writing lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. Their first collaboration
was Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1968. Further succesful musicals for the Rice - Lloyd Webber team included
Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) and Evita (1978). Other Tim Rice hits were Chess (1984) written to the music of Benny and
Bjorn of Abba; and the lyrics for The Lion King to music by Elton John. Tim Rice won the Best Original Song Oscar and The Golden Globe
in 1993 for 'A Whole New World' (music by Alan Menken) from the film Aladdin. Tim Rice was knighted in 1994. He is the co-author of the Guinness
Book of British Hit Singles and a co founder of Pavilion Books. In his Who's Who entry Tim Rice has an amusing reference to his acting: "Film debut as an actor in insultingly small role, The Survivor, 1980;
even smaller role in About a Boy, 2002." His luxury on Desert Island Discs was a telescope. In December 2002 Sir Tim Rice became a foster carer on his
Dundonnell Estate in Wester Ross for 200 hedgehogs facing the death
sentence in the Western Isles. Sir Tim Rice is a cricket fanatic who was President of the MCC from 2002 to 2003.
He also owned racehorses with Tom Marshall.
