About The Rape of Lucretia
An empire ready to fall! Corruption, outrage and death in the early days of Rome. It is a story as searingly relevant now as 2,000 years ago. Britten's Rape of Lucretia is one of his earliest operas, written in the mid-1940s, immediately after the Second World War

The plot tells of three Roman generals rising home from the wars unexpectedly, to test their wives' fidelity.  Of the three, only Lucretia the wife of Collatinus was found virtuously at home. Tarquinius Sextus, after a drunken night steals into Lucretia's house and at night rapes her at sword-point.  The next morning Lucretia summons her husband home and after telling him she had been raped, stabs herself to death.  A “chorus”, of one male and one female singer, comments on the action from a Christian perspective.

In this joint production of Bangkok Opera and Opera Studio Nederland, the story is updated to the 1930s AD, and set in the Rome of Mussolini's fascist Italian attempt to recreate the glories of the past.
