Ballet in Stuttgart has a long and rich history dating back to the 17th century. The history of today's Stuttgart Ballet began in 1961 when the South African born John Cranko was named to take over as ballet director and choreographer. Being one of the world's most important choreographers, he was famous for making his pieces "reflections of life himself" (John Cranko).John Cranko gathered together a group of outstanding young dancers among whom was the Brazilian Marcia Haydée who was to become his prime muse and inspiration.
During that time world famous choreographers like John Neumeier and Jirí Kylián started their careers as dancers in Stuttgart and presented encouraged and supported by John Cranko-their first choreographic works in Stuttgart. |

Cranko's ballets, including The Taming of The Shrew, Onegin (Eugene Onegin), the Gilbert and Sullivan romp, Pineapple Poll, and his incomparable Romeo & Juliet, demonstrate his genius in storytelling through dance. The company's tour to New York City in 1969 was such a triumphant success that critics hailed their success "The Stuttgart Ballet Miracle" (Clive Barnes, New York Times).
